How To: Get Started on Pinterest

For those of you who are't already addicted, Pinterest is like a collection of online inspiration boards. The website allows you to create different "boards" or categories to sort different images or "Pins" into. You have the option of giving each board a theme (or not) to organize the things that inspire you. It is essentially a cork board with an unlimited amount of push-pins right at your technologically savvy fingertips. Below, I will walk you through how to get started on Pinterest:

1. First, join Pinterest. You have the option of creating an account through Facebook or through an e-mail address. Depending on which option you click a pop-up menu will come up asking you to fill out information to create your account. Pinterest will then walk you through a four-step welcome, briefly explaining how to use their website.

2. Now you will be prompted to search for things that you are interested in. The sky (or your keyboard) is the limit.

3. Once you click on a category or search a topic, the website will prompt you to click on a "Pin" (or image) that interests you. Say you're interesting in Health & Fitness, and you want to learn more about a recipie for 20 Super-Healthy Smoothies. You simply click on the image and the website asks "Want to save this Pin for yourself?" and you simply have to click on the red Pin It button in the upper left hand corner.

4. A pop up will then appear prompting you to create your first board. Click on the "create your first board" button and you will see a few suggested board titles. You also have the option of flying solo and naming your board by yourself. Then, change the description from the previous Pinner or leave it if you feel it fits for you. Click Pin It and congratulations, you have made your very first Pin!

5. By clicking the button in the upper right hand corner (it will have your name on it) you are presented with a drop down menu. From here you can click on Your Profile and Pins that will take you to the page below. This is where you will be able to view all your boards and Pins. By clicking on the little pencil in the box with the large push-pin you will be able to edit and create your very own profile. This will help the Pinterest community get to know you better, so be yourself! Feel free to upload an image of yourself, your cat, a frolicking unicorn, etc. It will make your profile more personal.

6. The last step is to follow other Pinners. Following another Pinterest account will allow their Pins to pop up in your Pinterest Home Feed (the first screen you see with all the images). By choosing Pinners that have the same tastes, interests or quirks as you, you will have access to tons of new ideas and inspiring new images.
